Soo I know my last post was pretty heavy. The discussion about injustices against people of color can be ALOT. In order to keep sane, it is imperative that we keep our mental as well as physical health in good shape.
I strive to keep a healthy, positive state of mind to drown out the chaos. Lately “self care” has become the new hype. Everyone’s going natural and meditating.
I’ve always had my Sunday routine that included candle lit bubble baths, deep conditioning my hair, giving myself facials and staying active to reduce stress long before I knew it was called “self care”. But every since I’ve been “adulting” these grown up problems can get a bit overwhelming.
Well my boyfriend and I thought it would be a great idea to take a beach yoga class. We signed up for the class to not only support our friend but also to have some fun and decompress.
The ‘Beach, Do Yoga’ class we attended is hosted by a group called Melanated Wellness.

Recently I reached out to the Wellness Instructor Rachel, to learn more about her journey into becoming a yoga instructor and the benefits of beach yoga:
When did you begin practicing yoga?
Yoga has always intrigued me because I’ve been flexible all my life but I took a class in college and it offered me so much peace that it’s something I knew I had to continue!
What made you want to become an instructor?
I started by teaching my personal friends they asked me to lead a class one day and the rest is history… I loved how I was able to help guide others to peace! It is rewarding for me to help set others weeks!
What gave you the idea to hold a yoga class on the beach?
My co-creators suggested the beach for its calming and relaxing purposes!
What are the benefits of yoga?
Benefits of yoga include…anxiety and stress relief along with teaching you to be patient with your body, self and life. Yoga also helps with flexibility and strengthening your core
Does practicing yoga on the beach increase those benefits?
Yoga on the beach really seems to help with the level of relaxation because you’re in a calming environment and you can hear the waves which increases your relaxation
How often do you plan to do those classes?
We will be doing a half moon bay class 4xs a year! So another one in 3 months or so! I will be relocating to LA and will be offering classes regularly at local beaches starting in May!
Did you have to take any classes or special training to become an instructor or was it something you studied on your own?
I am a self-taught yogi. I have read books and watched lots of videos to be aware of the body and art of yoga! 🙂
After the class we were given vegan lunches called ‘Queen Vegan’ prepared by Melanated Wellness Meal Prep and Co-Creator, Michelle Singleton
“My mission was to provide yummy plant-based foods that would keep Yogis full and energized. The snacks I prepared required little to no heat cooking! Only preparation.
As a vegan, it’s imperative that I understand what a balanced meal looks like. I love food and I love getting creative with meals if time permits. I also love it when I can help broaden people’s idea of eating healthy. 💕
Beach, Do Yoga was nothing short of magical. ✨ I co-created this event with my earth angels. We brought Sunday’s Self-care to the sand in Pacifica, CA. The sun beamed on us as we laid out our mats and identified our mantras right before @embellishedbyrachel guided us through a spiritual yoga practice. We had so many beautiful souls that traveled near and far to be with us. We are overjoyed and grateful for everyone who came!” – Michelle, Meal Prep and Co-Creator
Although I am not a vegan, the lunch provided was delicious. My favorite snacks were the vegan chips and the peanut butter balls. I’m not big on avocados but my boyfriend loved the avocado dip so much he ate both ours.
My experience at ‘Beach, Do Yoga’ was amazing. I was able to learn and try new things. I have been working out and trying to get back in shape so I appreciated Rachel challenging us to hold the yoga poses a little longer. As a beginning in yogi, holding the yoga poses really helped with my flexibility and building my endurance. Having Rachel there to lead, guide, and encourage the class really made it worthwhile.
We began the class with an exercise where everyone stood in a circle to share our personal mantras we wish to achieve. This exercise made me realize we were all there to gain peace of mind. At ‘Beach, Do Yoga’ the focus was on our individual goals and mantras.
I want to add that this was also a great couples outing. We were able to try new things together, catch up with old friends, and met new ones.
My favorite part of the day was being in such a beautiful peaceful setting while practicing and learning new yoga exercises. Also, being surrounded by friendly, positive individuals from different walks of life, and different skill levels definitely enriched my experience. We were all given the space to learn, grow and improve at our own pace.
I look forward to attending another beach yoga class in the future!
